Begin by cutting one of the plastic cups, from top to bottom in vertical strips as shown on the left. |
| Place the other plastic cup inside of the cup with the vertical cuts. This will allow the cup to hold its shape. Tie a piece of yarn around one of the vertical cup pieces. This will hold the yarn in place. Then begin weaving, by placing the yarn over one piece of cup and under the next. |

Continue weaving over and under, over and under, around the cup. As you go, use your fingers to push the yarn down. This will make the weaving look nicer in the end. If you are working with a small child, they may not be able to push the yarn down themselves. |
Continue weaving all the way up the cup. When you get to the end, tie the yarn around the final piece of cup. You can now set aside the woven cup until you are ready to plant your bean. |

Using the second plastic cup, place crumpled up paper towels into the cup. Place 3 or 4 pinto beans along the sides of the cup. They will be held in place by the paper towels. Wet the paper towels thouroughly. |
Place the cup in a sunny place for several days. I like to use a window sill so that I can watch the beans grow. |
|
|
Once the bean has sprouted and has begun to form roots (see picture on left), you are ready to plant your bean in dirt. |
Cut the top off the plastic cup so that when you place it inside the woven cup, nothing is showing above the top of the woven cup. Fill the smaller cup with dirt. |
|
|
Place the sprouted bean in the cup of dirt. Be sure to cover the roots completely. |
Once the bean is planted, water the sprout. Since there is no way for the dirt to drain, be sure to only water it a little bit at a time. Once the sprout is watered, you are ready to place the sprout cup inside of the woven cup. Now set it in a window sill and enjoy! |
